There were still times when Arthur wondered how he managed to get talked into these things.

It was strange. Getting used to having magic as a part of his - and the kingdom's - daily life had been quite difficult, but after the first shock, he had expected things to get better. Easier. People weren't afraid of him anymore and didn't need to keep secrets from him. That was a good thing, wasn't it?

Except he hadn't counted on the tiny detail of Merlin getting ideas.

"You want to build a school."

"Oh, no! Not me! They do!" Merlin explained. It made no difference, really. His expression made it quite clear that he very much approved. "And - don't worry, it's not like they'll put it here or anything. I think they plan on going north. Of course, the details aren't decided yet, but-"

"Merlin. Focus."

"… sorry."

"Look. Just tell me one thing," said Arthur. "If this whole… school thing has nothing to do with Camelot, why are they even here?"

"Ah. Well. You see-" He stopped mid-sentence, and Arthur had to glare at him to make him react. "They've sort of… come looking for me."

Well, that was unexpected. Even in context.

"Why would they do that?"

Merlin, for some reason, looked almost as confused as he did. And a lot more annoyed, too.

"A dragon told them to," he sighed. "I mean, he said I'd be useful. He neglected to mention that, oh, he meant eventually and they just happen to be several decades early."

"All right," said Arthur, thoughtful. It wasn't the strangest thing he'd heard, which was kind of sad if he stopped to think about it. He tried not to. "And they're staying because…?"

"They liked Gaius's library."

"Merlin-"

"Really! I think Rowena is trying to bribe him into letting her take some of his books. Right. Good luck with that."

"So they are staying, then," Arthur sighed, before Merlin could go on yet another tangent. He had learned a while ago that some things were simply a lost battle, and trying to separate magic users from books was one of them. "Indefinitely?"

"… 'Fraid so."

"Not for those several decades, I hope."

"Of course not!" There was a pause. "I guess."

It was a mistery, really. How did he get talked into these things?
