Behind the Name [XXXHOLiC; English]

Title: Behind the Name
Rating: G
Genre: Humour / pre-romance
Characters: Watanuki
Pairings: Doumeki/Watanuki
Summary: Watanuki hates almost everything that Doumeki does, but most of all, he hates stupid nicknames.
Notes: The dorkiness is CLAMP's own; people do call Watanuki "Nobita" in canon (okay, once). Inspired by: 1) [personal profile] amewarashi's answers to the "5 things..." meme, where she mentions that it was Doumeki's idea; 2) some juicy details about Nobita that I learned on Wikipedia. This ficlet probably won't make much sense if you don't remember Doraemon (or at least google it).

Behind the Name

Of all the unnerving things that Doumeki did, this one had to be the worst.

True enough, he didn't do it very often. But that didn't make it any better. It was as if he saved it for special occasions or something. Just when Kimihiro had forgotten about it, or when he thought that idiot had finally got tired of the same stupid joke, there he went again. It was ridiculous, making fun of people with silly nicknames like a preschool kid.

And it was an inaccurate nickname, too. It made Kimihiro fume just to think about it. Just because he needed glasses did not mean he was like Nobita!

The most annoying part of it all was that Doumeki wasn't alone in this. Even Himawari found it funny – more like giggled uncontrollably at it, in fact. And Yuuko... well, it made no sense to complain to her. She just laughed and said that being compared to Nobita was better than being compared to other four-eyed dorks that she was not going to mention. Which of course meant that then Maru and Moro called him a four-eyed dork for a whole hour, with Mokona refreshing their memories every time it looked like they were going to stop.

Time passed, and Kimihiro's world got turned upside down more than once. He wondered if it was a side effect of working for Yuuko, or if he really did attract all that weirdness on his own. He learned things about himself. He learned things about Himawari, things that he would have rather not known. He learned things about Doumeki.

He even began to tolerate him, much as he hated to admit it. You couldn't remain archenemies after saving each other's life a million times. Normal people, Kimihiro thought, would be over stupid names by this point. But Doumeki still called him Nobita once in a while, and he still found him unnerving. That idiot never even bothered to come up with something a bit smarter. Why insist on such a childish joke? Kimihiro didn't get it.

In fact, he didn't get it until much, much later. It was one of those times when his world turned upside down yet again; it was the time when Kimihiro had to admit to himself that he thought of Doumeki in a way that he never, ever had expected to think of him. He hadn't counted on that, not at all, and it was annoying and embarrassing but it made sense. It made a lot of little things made sense, too, including ridiculous nicknames. That particular realization hit him when he was just about to fall asleep, and he was so tired that he couldn't help chuckling to himself – even if it was most undignified and he should have been Very Very Angry. To keep appeareances, at least.

The next morning, when he arrived at school, he stomped across the nearly empty classroom to Doumeki's desk and practically threw his lunch at him.

Nobita liked Shizuka,” he stated. Doumeki's expression didn't change.

Took you long enough,” he replied. “Idiot.”

And that was all they needed to say.

¿Sabes cuánto tiempo tiene que leo algo relacionado con esta pareja? Meses.

Me gustó mucho.
