Occupational Hazards
Sometimes, when one of Andy's friends came to visit him, he brought along his own toys. That way, Woody and the others had the chance to meet many interesting people, as soon as the kids left them alone to have a snack or watch TV.
One of their oldest acquaintances was an ancient Megatron who spent almost as much time there as in his own home. He had already belonged to his current kid's older brother, and that meant two things. One of them was that he was about eleven or twelve years old, which was a long time for a toy; the other one was that his joints complained quite a lot, due to the many lost battles he had been through.
"It's hard to be the villain," he often said, used to playing again and again scenes where he had the same luck as his fictional counterpart. In fact, he might be even less fortunate; according to the videos Woody had seen, the Decepticons in the cartoon almost always ran away on time.
"I don't understand," said Buzz, after a tough fight representing Star Command. "Why would a powerful general from outer space need to dig to the center of the Earth?"
"You're thinking too much," Woody intervened. It was lucky that his friend hadn't met Megatron until after his delusions of grandeur were gone, but when he heard him say things like that, it took some effort to remind himself of how much worse it could be. "It doesn't have to make sense. It's. A. Game."
"As a matter of fact," Megatron said, "there is a very good reason."
"... there is?"
"Ha! I knew it!"
"A true villain would never settle for less! It's not about being efficient, it's a matter of style. One must plan in great scale! Threaten the safety of the whole planet! Only that justifies a true evil laugh."
Woody had to admit it, it was always quite a show to see him get in character (and the famous evil laugh was identical to the one in the cartoon). Although his speech would probably have had more effect if he hadn't been scratching Rex's belly at the same time.
"I see. It makes sense," said Buzz, thoughtful. "Style is very important."
"It is, yes," Megatron nodded. "But in this line of work, you must be prepared for anything. Many times I've had to have tea with Bo Peep."
"Ah, yes. The danger of little sisters," sighed Buzz, who was beginning to discover it by himself.
"Oh, I'm not complaining. It's much more relaxing than all those fights. I'm too old for those things... It's been years since I could transform completely."
"... wow. I'm beginning to think that being a toy has more occupational hazards than being a member of Star Command."
"Don't doubt it," Woody said, giving him a light pat on the shoulder. "But it has its rewards."
Before he could explain which ones they were, however, the soldiers returned from their expedition to the living room.
"News from the front, sir! We face a sleepover!"
Megatron sighed, resigned.
"Well," he said, "there goes my chess night with Prime."
