... I have such a ridiculous amount of backstory for this universe, it's not even funny. :P You'll probably see more one-shots set in this AU.
First Day At School
It was going to be a long, long year.
Optimus couldn’t say that he was surprised to find out that Sentinel had become Head Boy. It was to be expected, really. And he wasn’t jealous, either; he wasn’t the type. A little bitter, well, maybe. But he didn’t want to be in Sentinel’s place or anything of the like.
He only wished he would just shut up about it for five minutes. Honestly, that was all he wanted. It seemed even that was too much to ask for. Then again, Sentinel was pointedly talking at everyone but him, so he did the only sane thing: as soon as he saw his classmate sit down, he went to take a seat on the opposite end of the Gryffindor table.
There were very few people on that side, which meant he could relax for a little while, until the inevitable happened. As soon as the sorting ceremony began, the empty seats started to fill with first years. Some of the kids looked excited, others looked shy, most of them looked terrified. Optimus couldn’t blame them. They’d just heard Starscream’s so-called ‘welcoming’ speech, after all. The Deputy Headmaster took great delight in traumatizing the students as early as possible.
He was brought back from the not so pleasant memories of his own first day at school when someone took the seat right next to his. It was a tiny little girl, with red pigtails and a bright smile, who looked up at him full of enthusiasm.
"Hi! I’m Sari!" she said. "What’s your name? Are you a Prefect? Dad told me I should try to find a Prefect."
"Um… hi," he replied, a little taken aback. "I’m Optimus. Sorry, I’m not a Prefect… ah, but I can help you anyway, if you need," he added quickly as soon as he saw the face she was making. He just couldn’t say no to that look.
Besides, the first day of school was already scary enough without the first person you talked to refusing to help you. Even in a normal school. At Hogwarts… yeah, he remembered how he felt back then. And, in any case, what was the worst that could happen? She probably just had some questions.
Or, rather, a lot of questions, as he soon found out. And she also had a lot to say. Sari’s face lit up again as quickly as it had darkened, and she immediately started talking at an unbelievable speed.
"Great! Thanks! Wow, this place is weird. It’s probably gonna take a lot ‘til I get used to it. Good to find someone nice for a change! I mean. Not that I know a lot of people yet. And that guy who took us to the boats… Omega, right? He was nice too. But then Mr Screechy there kinda ruined the good impression."
"Yeah, Starscream does that," he sighed. "But don’t worry. You won’t have to see him too much. Our Head of House is much better."
"… well, that doesn’t sound too hard," Sari said, looking doubtful. He gave her a reassuring smile.
"You’ll like him, I promise. Ratchet can be a bit cranky, but you can trust him with anything. He’s the older guy who looks like he wants to go away already," he added, pointing at the teacher in question. The girl followed his gaze and grimaced.
"Can’t blame him," she said. "Look at the people he’s stuck with!"
"They’re an odd bunch," Optimus had to admit. "But they aren’t all that bad. Apart from Ratchet and Omega, you can count on Arcee. And I’ve never had class with Yoketron, but I’ve heard he’s nice."
"So basically the ones who don’t look like they’re about to kill someone," Sari said, her cheerfulness just a little forced. "That’ll be easy to remember."
"Sorry. I hope I’m not scaring you too much…"
"Nah, it’s okay," she assured him. "I kinda had an idea that it’d be like this. I mean, Dad used to work with the Headmaster, so…"
Optimus blinked at that, confused. Working with Megatron…? He had vaguely heard that the Headmaster used to have some investments apart from his job here at school – something about a Muggle scientist – but those were just rumours. Or so he’d thought. Anyway, there was something else that he found even stranger.
"And he still sent you here?" he asked, not realizing just how awful that sounded until was too late. Fortunately, Sari didn’t seem to make much of it, and simply shrugged.
"We didn’t have much of a choice when we found out I could do magic," she explained. "It’s still better than Durmstrang. And closer, too. Dad’s moved to Hogsmeade and everything."
Before Optimus could think of anything to reply to that (this girl’s story kept getting stranger and stranger), Lugnut’s deep, familiar voice called to silence. Even though he was a bit relieved to be saved from any more awkward conversation, he couldn’t hold back a sigh. This introduction to the august and glorious Headmaster’s words usually took longer than the speech proper, and a few minutes into it even Megatron himself started to look bored.
After all these years, however, Optimus had learned to tune it out. He was lost in his own thoughts, wondering if he could manage to avoid Sentinel in spite of being forced to share a room with him, until Sari’s gasp brought him back to reality.
"That guy…" she whispered. "Did his face just- just-"
"Oh, Blitzwing! Yeah, he’s a Metamorphmagus, better get used to… oh, no."
"… what?" Sari asked, nervous.
"He looks happy."
"And that’s a bad thing?"
"During a speech like this? It can only mean–"
An explosion shook the hall before he could finish the sentence. Of course.
He ducked and threw his arms around Sari, to protect her from any possible debris hitting her, but nothing happened. Taking a chance, he looked up and peeked around the room; it seemed that only the professors' table had been damaged. Well, that was enough to make it better than the previous year's feast, at least.
"What was that about?" Sari asked, worming her way out of his arms. "I thought this place was supposed to be safe!"
She said something else after that – more perfectly understandable complaining, Optimus assumed – but he couldn't quite hear it. It was time for Starscream's inevitable speech, and he had made quite sure that his voice drowned out every other sound.
"Rejoice, students of Hogwarts!" he started, at the top of his lungs as usual. "A new, wondrous era has finally begun! All of this ineptitude is finally over – thanks to little old me, of course, so you'd do well to remember that and treat your new and amazing Headmaster with the proper respect. Headmaster Starscream. I like the sound of that…"
He was so lost in his thoughts that he just kept rambling on and on, ignoring the fact that the students were paying no attention to him. Well, the first years did look scared, but everyone else was too used to this kind of thing to be truly upset. One would think that Starscream himself would be used to it, Optimus thought, but apparently he never learned: once again, he was too distracted to notice the looming shape of Lugnut standing behind him, wand at the ready…
… and then Lugnut was pushed aside. He was replaced by the smaller, but somehow much more imposing, figure of the actual Headmaster.
Megatron didn't put up a show. He didn't even raise his voice. He glared at the back of Starscream's head for an instant, then pointed his wand at him, and a moment later the other man was lying face-first on the floor a good twenty meters away.
The whole room fell silent at once. Megatron's voice was perfectly calm as he spoke.
"As our Deputy Headmaster has so graciously demonstrated," he said, "I am the greatest authority in this school. Anyone else has a question?"
Even the seventh years, used to these things, stared at their plates and tried very hard to act as if they weren't there at all. Even the few students who actually admired Megatron (Optimus could never understand that, but they existed, somehow) made an effort to blend into the background. The Headmaster looked around the Great Hall with a pleased smile, and then returned to his seat.
He hadn't quite made it there, however, when a jet of red light barely missed him and shattered the back of his chair. There was an instant of terrible silence, and then-
"STARSCREAM!"
That was when all hell broke loose. They leapt at each other, shooting spells all over the place with no regard for their students whatsoever… and to make things even better, half the professors felt the need to join in. Lugnut was fighting at the Headmaster's side immediately; it took him about three seconds to destroy the entire High Table. Strika was yelling orders at people, which didn't stop her from getting right in the middle of the brawl herself. Blitzwing, of course, had enthusiastically taken the chance to blow things up and seemed to be having the time of his life.
Meanwhile, closer to the students' tables, Yoketron was deflecting spells and debris with the calm and patience of someone who was much to used to this. Arcee was helping the Prefects take care of the youngest students; most of them were running around in a panic by now. Ratchet was also doing his best to make sure they stayed safe, but his much harsher way meant that he had a better effect on the kids who already knew him.
"Where's that good-for-nothing Head Boy?" he asked, his voice loud and frustrated over the general chaos. "Do your job and take these kids to their Common Rooms!"
Optimus didn't stick around to hear Sentinel's angry reply. He had more important things to do – like finding Sari. One second she had been right there sitting next to him, and the following she was simply gone. Where had she run off to? He couldn't help but feel responsible… He was the only person she knew so far, after all. He should have been more careful! What if she had gotten herself in trouble?
He looked around the place, trying to recognize her distinctive red pigtails, but to no avail. Perhaps she had joined the rest of the Gryffindor first years and followed Jazz or some other Prefect to their Common Room? Then again, the part of him that was used to everything always going wrong was sure that it was too much to ask.
"Optimus! Hey! Over here!"
Sari's voice startled him out of his thoughts, and it took him a while to figure out where it was coming from. After a few seconds, he finally found her: she was hiding under a table, along with a kid that Optimus vaguely recognized from the Hufflepuff Quidditch team.
"Lost this?" the boy said, oddly cheerful considering the situation, and tilted his head to point at Sari.
"Hey, I'm not a thing!" she exclaimed. But she sounded quite amused, too.
Optimus couldn't help but stare at them. They were having fun. The Great Hall was practically falling apart around them – again – by the very same hands of the people who were supposed to take care of them, and here they were, joking around and laughing. Sometimes he felt as if he was the only person left in the world with any sense of responsibility.
"You really shouldn't be here," he said. "It's dangerous."
"It's safer than out there!" said the Hufflepuff kid. He peered out of his hiding place, as if he was examining the terrain. "I thiiink I might make it if I run for it, though. Do you guys think you'll be okay?"
"I'll be fine, Bumblebee," Sari assured him. "Don't worry so much! I'm with a seventh year after all, right?"
"… uhhh. Yeah. I guess," Optimus sighed. Seriously, how did he get talked into all these things? "You should go. I'll take her to our Tower."
"Great!" he said, obviously relieved. "See ya!"
"See you, 'Bee!" Sari shouted after him, waving. The boy was fast. It barely took him a few moments to make it to the end of the Hall, dodging spells with ease, and then he disappeared into the corridor.
Optimus wasn't that quick, or that agile. But he did know how to cast shielding spells, which was just as useful. Still, he hurried to get out of there, anyway, dragging the girl by the hand. It wasn't until they were out in one of the corridors that he allowed himself to relax.
"Soooo…" Sari said, without letting go of his hand. "Is it always like this?"
He would have liked to be reassuring, really. It would have been nice to be able to tell her that this kind of chaos only happened once a year, or that the professors weren't as crazy as they looked, or… well, anything. But he just couldn't lie to her. In the end, he just pulled a face and sighed.
"Yeah," he said. "Pretty much."
Contrary to everything he had expected, Sari looked up at him and grinned.
"Awesome."

Same dorm as Sentinel. You are evil, Decepticon evil at that. Sumdac in Hogsmeade has 125% potential for crack, I love it ;3
Bee is love, always and forever.

Starscream teaches Charms! But he hates it because it's pretty generic. XDDD

They're in the same House and year, it's not my fault~~

I'm sure he can make charms "un-generic" (if that's even a word), plus he gets to traumatize all the first years. Fresh meat every year >;3
