From Distant Lands [Harry Potter; English]

Title: From Distant Lands
Rating: G
Genre: Uh... romance?
Characters: Porpentina and Newt Scamander
Summary: Courtship, presents and meddling mothers.
Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] 31_days's theme The new exotic

Porpentina's mother always talked about the presents her husband had given her when he was courting her. She could go on for hours on end, detailing every little thing she had received back then. When Porpentina was a child, she used to love hearing the stories of all those wonders, all those exotic treasures.

Her father had travelled far in his youth, representing the British magical community in the most distant corners of the Empire. During the long time he was away, he never forgot about his fiancée. He sent her all kinds of gifts, not only from the lands that belonged to the Crown, but from every place he set foot on.

There were Chinese porcelain jars with dragons painted on them. There were Indian gods and goddesses carved in sandalwood. There was everything from Japanese lucky cats to a Persian flying carpet.

Now that she was an adult, Porpentina was tired of listening to her mother ramble about it. She didn't do it to tell her stories anymore. Not even to show off.

Porpentina knew that the whole point of those anecdotes was to remind her that a young man who worked with House Elves in one of the lowest divisions of the Ministry wouldn't be able to give her presents like those.

She didn't care at all. Newt was clever, determined and adventurous. Porpentina knew that someday he would surprise them all.

Years later, she could show her mother gifts like Diricawl feathers and scales from a real Chinese Fireball.

Why do I like this so? I don't know.

But somehow, it's short and sweet and encapsulates a lot in its relatively sparse lines. <3

I love this - very minor characters indeed, but you fit so many details of their lives into a perfectly crafted, concise little fic, slipped between the lines. Lovely :)
