The Warmth of the Sun
The days were long, too long, when she was alone with Mama. Mama was always busy. She had to cook and clean and take care of the house, and she had to look after her, too. Mama was always so tired. But she still played with her, she found time to tell her stories and sing with her and give her pieces of parchment to draw on.
In the evenings, Mama would take her by the hand so they could stroll around the garden for a while. She liked the garden a lot, but only at night. During the day she could see the street from there, she could see a lot of people. She didn't like people.
... no, she did like some of them. She liked Mama and she liked Al and, most of all, she liked Abe.
She also liked the warm and shiny days, because Abe was home then. But not always, not always... Sometimes the air was warm and the sun was bright, and she sat all day staring at the window, waiting, and Abe wouldn't come. Mama sat next to her and spoke in a quiet voice, caressing her as she talked to her, and she said things about “summer” and “holidays”. She said that it wasn't time yet, not yet.
It made her sad. It made her so sad, so angry, and she could never remember what happened next. She only knew that she woke up in Mama's arms, and she rocked her back and forth and kissed the top of her head. Sometimes Mama sang for her. Sometimes she cried.
But there were also good things when the boys were away, like the letters. Abe always wrote to her. Al's letters were both for her and Mama, but Abe wrote for her alone, sent her letters of her own that she could keep forever and ever. Mama read them to her as many times as she wanted, and then she kissed them and kept them in the little box with her treasures. When Mama wrote back to them, she also sent them all the drawings and little presents that she had made for them. Abe never forgot to say thank you.
Then the right time came at last and the boys came home together with the sun. Abe spent all the time with her those days. Mama smiled more, too, and she left her with Abe and with Al when she needed to cook or take care of the house.
Al was really nice, too. He told her stories and he made sparkly magic for her, and he brought her sweets when Mama wasn't looking. But sometimes he was too busy and he didn't have time to play with her. He spent hours and hours reading and writing, or alone in his room.
Abe was never too busy. No matter what he was doing, he stopped whenever she called him. He was never upset about it, either, he always smiled at her. He let her help him feed the goats and he took her to walk in the garden when Mama was too busy. Abe only got sad when she got sad, he only got upset when Al wouldn't play with her.
He said he loved her more than anyone else did, and she knew it was true. She really really loved him too. She loved all of them, even Mama when she was too tired to sing, even Al when he didn't want to play. But she loved Abe most of all.
She made a lot of presents for them while they were at home. She made little dolls and toys and ornaments, so they could remember her when they were away. It always scared her so much when they left... They'd forget all about her, she was sure of that. She knew that, if she didn't remind them, they'd never remember. They met so many people out there that they wouldn't care about her anymore. Just to think about it made her want to cry, but Abe always stopped her before she got too upset. He hugged her just like Mama did, and he told her that he loved her so much, everyone loved her, they'd always remember her. He promised they'd write to her and send her presents.
He never promised they would stay home with her. Mama said that they couldn't. But she couldn't go with them, either. She couldn't follow them. She was sure she wouldn't like it anyway, there'd be too many people and it'd be so frightening... but they would be there, wouldn't they? They were her big brothers. They were smart and strong and brave and they'd protect her from everything. And she missed them so, so much.
But even Abe told her that she had to stay at home. Even he said that, even he wanted to stay away from him, to stop following him. It made her mad. It made her explode with anger and sadness and fear. Then she realized – this is why I can't go, this is why they don't want me there. And that made it even worse.
She wanted to stop, she really wanted to. She tried and tried and tried but that thing inside of her wanted to get out.
When she opened her eyes again, the room was messy and Abe was caressing her hair. His eyes were so sad even though he tried to smile at her. But she didn't want to make him sad, not ever. It would be so nice if they could just stay like this... she wished that time would stop, that they could stay forever and ever like that. She wished her brothers never had to go away again.
But she knew that the happy days ended, always, always. The sun would leave, and the warmth would leave, and she couldn't follow.
