Western Magic
“Last time we met,” Albus Dumbledore said over his cup of tea, “I was the younger one.”
Eriol smiled as he put down his own cup on the Headmaster’s desk.
“It has been a long time, I know,” he replied. “We should have a proper talk about it, once things are quiet. But, for now, there are more urgent matters to discuss…”
“Ah, yes,” said Dumbledore, “I received your letter. Are you sure that this is a good idea?”
“It was the best plan I could think of. They both agreed, and so did their families.”
“Still, I wonder how much they can truly help. You know about the Prophecy…”
“Harry is the one destined to confront Voldemort,” Eriol said with a slight nod, “that much is certain. But if Sakura and Shaoran stay at Hogwarts, they can help to protect everybody else.”
“Yes,” the Headmaster sighed, “we will need people like them, if they are willing to help. But they are still children…”
“Harry is only three years older,” Eriol pointed out. The silence became uncomfortable after a little while.
“Besides,” he suddenly added as an afterthought, “the experience might knock some sense into my cute descendant.”
The usual amused twinkle returned to Dumbledore’s eyes.
“Which one?”
Eriol’s only answer was a mischievous smile.

“I honestly don’t see why I should get a wand,” Shaoran said for the umpteenth time as Sakura lead him through Diagon Alley.
“Oh, will you stop that already?” she sighed. “You didn’t buy it, after all, and I don’t want to hear you ramble about Western and Eastern magic again.”
Shaoran held back a sigh of his own, but he didn’t answer. He supposed he had been rambling- even if he was right. Sakura might be able to wave a wand like the European wizards did (a cherry tree and unicorn hair wand that had filled the shop with a shower of pink sparks), but she was a special case. He wasn’t going to make a fool of himself with a wand when he had his own magic, which was rather strong, thank you very much.
They had spent all morning wandering through the Alley. After getting all their required books, two sets of plain black robes that would have horrified Daidouji, and Sakura’s wand, they were finally able to rest. Shaoran invited his girlfriend to an ice-cream, trying to make up for his bad mood.
“It will be fun, Shaoran,” she told him. “I’m sure you’ll like learning about how things work here in
“I don’t know. But we didn’t come to have fun, anyway,” he said with a shrug. “We came to help.”
“But nobody said we couldn’t have fun in the meantime,” replied Sakura. “Eriol said we should try to live as normally as possible, remember? And Dad said that he was right.”
Shaoran chose not to make a comment about how her father agreeing with Hiiragizawa was creepy at best and, at worst, rather frightening.
“Fine, I’ll try,” he sighed. “It’s just… it’s going to be strange, staying at a wizarding school. I knew more magic than these students when I was younger than they are in their first year-”
“Shaoran…”
“…not that I’m going to mention it to any of them,” he promised. “And then there’s the tiny detail of your brother coming along to breathe down my neck.”
“How many times do I have to tell you? He came because Yukito had to be here.”
“That’s what he told you,” Shaoran muttered.
“Come on, he won’t even be at Hogwarts,” Sakura said. “They’ll stay at the town… what’s its name?”
“Hogsmeade. But it’s near enough.”
“Of course it’s near enough, I need Yue to be close to me. I can’t very well pass him for a ‘magical pet’, can I?”
Shaoran couldn’t help a grin.
“So, what did the plushie think of his new title?”
“Oh, he threw a fit,” she sighed. “But he’ll have to keep it if he wants to stay in the castle with me.”
“Well, maybe I will have fun then…”
“Shaoran, please.”

Dumbledore had decided not to make a fuss of their arrival to the school; they were Sorted in his office, and announced with a simple mention in his start-of-term speech. However, exchange students at Hogwarts were more than rare, so they were still very noticeable. The very first day, Sakura made several acquaintances in Hufflepuff, where she had been sorted.
Shaoran wasn’t that lucky. His first meeting with a Hogwarts student wasn’t with someone of his House, but an older Prefect who intercepted him in the halls- a blond, smug looking boy from Slytherin.
“Hey, kid! Are you the new exchange student?”
He nodded. The Prefect smirked at him for no apparent reason.
“I heard you don’t even have a wand.”
“I use Eastern magic,” Shaoran said laconically. Not that he expected this brat to understand.
“Really?” the other boy said, predictably enough. “What kind of magic can you do without a wand, anyway?”
“Oh, let me show you…”

“I can’t believe you did such a thing!” Sakura chided him. “Are you going to get in trouble from the very first day?”
“He was looking for it,” Shaoran muttered.
“I know, but still- we’re the guests here, we should at least behave ourselves…”
“Excuse me,” they heard someone say behind them, and turned to see a Gryffindor Prefect; he was a very tall, red-head boy. “Are you the fourth-year who sent Malfoy flying with a wind spell of sorts?”
Shaoran looked up bravely at him.
“Yes, that was me.”
“Oh, then… congratulations!” the Prefect exclaimed, shaking his hand with enthusiasm. “And thank you so much for the show! I’m Ronald Weasley, proud to have you in Gryffindor. And no matter what they tell you about this, just remember that he had it coming.”
They both stared at him for a moment, confused.
“…are you supposed to be telling him this?” Sakura asked at last.
“Not really,” Weasley admitted with a shrug. “But since nobody’s listening- ”
“That’s what you think,” a girl said, walking down the hall. “If you’re going to escape your responsibilities as a Prefect, Ron, at least make sure you’re not caught.”
“C’mon, Hermione, you’re not going to take points from him, are you?”
“Well, I should…” the girl sighed, and then turned to Shaoran. “I guess we could take five points from Gryffindor, and consider it settled before you get a detention, don’t you think?”
“Um, whatever you say,” he mumbled. This two were confusing him- and Sakura, judging from the look on her face.
“Oh, I didn’t introduce myself!” the girl exclaimed suddenly. “I’m sorry- my name’s Hermione Granger, from Gryffindor. And you’re a Li, aren’t you?”
Shaoran nodded. Granger’s eyes seemed to shine with enthusiasm.
“Wonderful! Then you can tell me everything about your family! I’ve always wanted to learn more about Eastern magic, they barely mention it here. But I think it’s really interesting, I’d love to know how it works- ”
“Don’t push him, Hermione,” Weasley intervened. Shaoran and Sakura were beginning to say that it was alright, when somebody else joined them in the already crowded hall.
“Oh, here are you two…” said another boy- Harry Potter.
Hiiragizawa had told them they would recognize him for his lightning-shaped scar. However, he had neglected to mention that he looked suspiciously like himself.
Sakura’s eyes widened in shock, and Shaoran fought very hard not to run away as was his first instinct.
This was going to be a long, long year.
